Harking back to an age when travel oozed glamour, high occasion and romance.
If you fly regularly, you may have heard about a long-gone golden age of air travel. As commercial aviation expanded through the 1950s into the jet age of the 1960s, passengers dressed in their finest clothes to fly on airplanes where glamorous stewardesses served food on fine china.
This fabled time inspires memories of when Howard Hughes’s TWA and Juan Trippe’s Pan American lifted Hollywood stars and business leaders across continents and even oceans in white-glove style. This was an era when air travel was as much an adventure for the passenger as the final destination.
More recently air travel has become something passengers tolerate rather than enjoy but Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways is on a mission to change all that as it seeks to create a new golden age of travel with its new product and service offering on its Airbus A380 and Boeing B787 Dreamliner aircraft and across the rest of the fleet.
These include The Residence by Etihad, the world’s most luxurious living space in the air, available only on the airline’s A380 aircraft – something the passengers from the 1950s and 60s could only dream of.
Accommodating single or double occupancy, it features a living room, separate double bedroom and ensuite shower room. Guests in The Residence will also have a personal Butler.
The A380 features First Apartments, which are fully private suites with a separate reclining lounge seat and full-length bed, as well as a chilled refreshments cabinet, personal vanity unit and wardrobe.
On the B787, Etihad Airways has designed an enhanced First Suite, adding many new features including a chilled refreshments cabinet.
The Business Studio and Economy Smart Seat feature on both the A380 and the B787. Unveiled at a global media launch in May, the new cabins and service offering follow the airline’s pledge to transform air travel and make every guest journey a remarkable one.
James Hogan, Etihad’s president and CEO, said: “These new living spaces will raise inflight product and service standards to their highest level yet in commercial aviation and alter air travellers’ expectations of inflight comfort and luxury forever.
Etihad Airways’ A380 and B787 deliver the most advanced airline cabins in the industry, while meeting all weight, range and cost targets at our desired seat count. This allows us to offer products unparalleled in quality and style, yet at competitive prices across all three cabins.”
